FSSC 22000: pest control under ISO/TS 22002-1FSSC 22000: pest control

FSSC 22000 combines ISO 22000 with sector-specific prerequisite programs. For food manufacturers, the rules on pest control are set out in ISO/TS 22002-1, section 12: a documented program, traps and detectors at key locations, and an evaluation that makes trends visible. For pest control, FSSC 22000 refers to ISO/TS 22002-1: a program, traps at key locations, trend analysis.

Key facts at a glance

Prerequisite program

Pest control is part of the prerequisite programs on which the management system is built.

Traps at key locations

Detectors and traps are placed at the critical locations and inspected often enough that new activity is noticed.

Identifying trends

The results of the inspections are evaluated in order to identify developments.

What the standard requires

ISO/TS 22002-1, section 12: pest control

In addition to ISO 22000, FSSC 22000 audits food manufacturers against ISO/TS 22002-1. This is what the section on pest control requires, and this is how you prove it.

ISO/TS 22002-1, 12.2Documented program

A named person is responsible, and the program is documented and specifies target pests, plans, methods, schedules and the approved products.

Stations, location plan and responsibilities are stored in the app, and alerts go to the named person.

ISO/TS 22002-1, 12.4Preventing harborage and infestation

Organize storage so that pests can hardly find food and water, and eliminate possible hiding places.

Alerts show where activity is concentrated, and therefore where storage or housekeeping needs to be improved.

ISO/TS 22002-1, 12.5Traps at key locations, robust and inspected

Detectors and traps are located at key locations, are robust, tamper-resistant and suited to the target pest. They are inspected often enough that new activity is detected.

Digital stations report new activity in real time, instead of it only becoming visible at the next inspection round.

ISO/TS 22002-1, 12.5Analyzing results for trends

The results of the inspections are analyzed in order to identify trends.

The history per station and area is the trend analysis, with no additional report.

ISO/TS 22002-1, 12.6Immediate control, documented products

In the event of an infestation, control measures are taken immediately, only by trained staff, and every use of a product is recorded with type, quantity, location, time and target pest.

Poison is only used once an infestation is confirmed, and the response is recorded in the history with a time stamp.

Summary in our own words based on ISO/TS 22002-1:2009. A revised edition (ISO 22002-1:2025) has been available since 2025; the version valid for your audit is authoritative.

Why digital traps fit 12.5

Section 12.5 requires traps to be inspected often enough that new activity is detected. With manual inspections, that is a trade-off between effort and gaps: if you go every four weeks, you will see new activity only after two weeks on average.

Digital stations resolve this trade-off. They report new activity the moment it happens, and the history delivers the required trend analysis at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers

Does FSSC 22000 apply to German food manufacturers?

Yes, if your customers require it. FSSC 22000 is especially common among international brand manufacturers. The pest control requirements are then set out in ISO/TS 22002-1.

How does FSSC 22000 differ from IFS when it comes to pest control?

At its core, hardly at all: both require a documented program, traps in the right places, documented responses and a trend analysis. FSSC words it via ISO/TS 22002-1, IFS in chapter 4.13 of IFS Food.

How often do traps have to be inspected under ISO/TS 22002-1?

The standard does not specify a fixed interval, but requires a frequency at which new activity is detected. Digital stations meet this continuously, because they report activity immediately.
